Although sudden cardiac arrest is much more common in aduklts than in children, it is now recognized that pediatric cardiac arrest is more common than was once thought.

Initially AEDs were designed to be used on adults only. Because of this, the American Heart Association originally recommended that AEDs only be used on children if they are the size of an average 8 year-old (approximately 55 pounds).

Several AED manufacturers have now developed pediatric attenuation electrodes which allow for their AEDs to be used on children younger than 8 years old.

Philips Medical Corp. was the first to market their Pediatric Attenuating cable.

Medtronic PhysioControl received FDA approval to market their pediatric attenuating cable in January of 2003.

Cardiac Science also markets a pediatric attenuating cable.

These AEDs can be used on all age groups when the pediatric cables are utilized.
