On Tuesday, June 8, 2004, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously voted in favor of Introductory Resolution 1440. This bill mandates at least one Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to be present in every health club in Suffolk County, along with at least one staff member trained in its use. The 18-0 affirmative vote indicates how important the concept of public access defibrillation has come to be realized. The legislation, which will surely save lives, was proposed by Cameron Alden (R, Islip).

A similar bill has been proposed in the New York State Legislature in Albany, as well as a bill to make CPR and AED training part of the health curriculum in all High Schools. On May 11th Dr. Sciammarella, representing the American Heart Association, spoke before the Suffolk County Legislature's Health Committee in support of the resolution.
