Dr. Joseph Sciammarella was chosen as the medical honoree for the American Heart Association’s Second Annual Have A Heart luncheon which was held on February 11, 2003 at the Crest Hollow Country Club.

Dr. Sciammarella has had a long affiliation as a volunteer with the American Heart Association, since he first became a CPR Instructor in the mid-1970s. He has served the Long Island Region as Chair of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee, Co-Chair of the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Committee, and as Regional Faculty for Basic Life Support (CPR), ACLS, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Since 1999, Dr. Sciammarella has served as the Regional Spokesperson for the Heart Association’s Operation Heartbeat, and as National Faculty for ACLS. He has served as the Medical Director of the American Heart Association Training Center at Mercy Medical Center since 1998.

Dr. Sciammarella was honored for his involvement in promoting the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in the community. As Medical Director of the Suffolk County EMS System from 1989-1994, he introduced the first AEDs into the Suffolk County Police Department. Today, every police vehicle in Suffolk County is equipped with an AED. Dr. Sciammarella has presented lectures at numerous International Emergency Cardiovascular Care Conferences throughout North America. Among numerous scientific publications, he is the author of chapters on AEDs, ACLS, and CPR in various print and on-line textbooks.
