The following is an actual e-mail received by Health Training/Consulting from one of the employees of the Northport/East Northport School District:
To Claire DeSetto
Hi! My name is Jamie Dellaquila and I work for the Northport [School] District. You recently retrained me in Adult CPR and AED on 3/20/03. Tonight I had [to] use the skills you taught me.
Here is what happened:
I was at a restaurant with friends when I heard the hostess frantically telling someone to call 911. I got up to see if I could help. A man was lying [on the] ground, unconscious. Another woman was doing a sweep of his mouth. He had hamburger in his mouth but was not breathing. I began to do chest compressions and he started to cough up the hamburger. We turned him over on his side so he could cough up the rest of [the] pieces.
He sat up and felt he needed air. First we sat him down at another table then he wanted to go outside. I waited with him outside on a bench until the ambulance arrived. He was conversing and seemed fine, apologizing for causing such a fuss.
The ambulance arrived and the crew took over. I filled them in on what occured They thanked me for my help. When I left the man he was refusing to [go] to the hospital and they were taking his blood pressure. Hopefully they convinced him to get checked out.
I want to thank you for the excellent training I received from your organization. You never in a million years think you will need it and I hope I never will again. But at least I know I am prepared.
Sincerely,
Jamie Dellaquila
